Medicare for All is the most economical proposal to provide comprehensive health care to everyone in our country. It is the North Star for our movement for health justice. This event features news about the new bill and the 109 congressmembers already on board — over half of the democratic caucus including key committee chairs. See list of co-sponsors at the end of this commondreams.org article.

Strategy Podcast with Rep. Jayapal staffer, Stephanie Kang

In addition, here’s a 36-minute podcast recorded March 8 that is well worth watching. Stephanie Kang, Pramila’s healthcare policy lead in the Congressional Progressive Caucus Center, and Healthcare-NOW!’s Ben Day and Stephanie Nakajima, offer very useful overviews of M4A and the politics and strategy to get there.

Our 2021 Policy Priorities were unanimously approved at our HCHR December general meeting, attended by 30 of our 32 Sponsoring (voting) organizations. Two Sponsors abstained on particular items in the proposal but endorsed the rest of the package. After a welcome and Native land acknowledgment by WA State Labor Council President Larry Brown, seven speakers from Sponsor organizations presented on the political context and federal/state legislative possibilities, the importance of more organizations joining our campaign, the specifics of our policy proposals, and plans to activate a “rapid response” program so we can generate grass-roots input and pressure on our state and federal electeds.

Our meeting emcees Gina Owens and Margaret Cary outlined HCHR’s goals as a community-labor campaign to strengthen our relationships with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and Peoples of Color) communities and to help build the grass-roots movement we will need to win Universal Health Care.

You can watch the recording of our meeting here. Unfortunately, the recording didn’t capture Larry Brown’s opening remarks on WSLC’s commitment to universal health care and its continuing support as a founding Sponsor of HCHR.

If you’re interested in joining forces to work on the Rapid Response effort, please email hchrwashington@gmail.com.

Help Secure Georgia U.S. Senate Seats

A Must-Have for Federal Legislation

Many organizations are helping register new voters and get out the vote for the January 5 run-off election for the two US Senate seats that will determine who controls the Senate in 2021.

While HCHR does not endorse candidates for office, we encourage people to volunteer to enable the Biden Administration to pass legislation we so urgently need to combat COVID, recover the economy, and address racial injustice.

The WA State Labor Council has organized phone calls to union members in Georgia every Tuesday, 11 AM – 1 PM. WSLC Political Director Cherika Carter sent this message: “These phonebanks are specifically for union members and retirees and they can sign up here. If you have other coalition members who aren’t union feel free to send them to volunteer with The New Georgia Project. A few former union sisters I know are leading those efforts, and they’ll be in good hands.”

The New Georgia Project will also set up phone or text banks for any organization wanting to help. Daily phone banks available with MoveOn.

NEW: Texting with Working Families Party:  Register to text for Reverend Raphael Warnock click here. Phone banks for Warnock every Tues, Weds, and Thurs here.

If letter-writing to voters suits you best, you can volunteer with Vote Forward and Daily Kos here.
